Emma Sulkowicz is a visual artist and activist who creates performance art addressing campus sexual violence and rape culture. As a senior at Columbia University in 2014, Sulkowicz carried a dorm mattress around campus and to classes in the endurance performance piece "Mattress Performance (Carry That Weight)," including carrying it across the stage at Columbia College Class Day in 2015. The work and her allegations drew widespread media attention, and Sulkowicz has spoken publicly about the stigma attached to the piece. Sulkowicz continues to produce performance and video work, including the 2016 piece "Emmatron" and later video projects exploring consent, rage, and trauma. Sulkowicz speaks publicly as an artist and consent culture activist.
